Doing that might be new and it also gives me the opportunity to post some sexy pics. Rather than rehash either of those themes, I’m going to concentrate on Valeria. One of the first (if not the first) was my own article that was published in The Cimmerian, February 2005 under the title “Inspirations From Life.” I rewrote that article and posted it on this blog a few months ago: Quite a few are about how REH was inspired to write this story after a trip to New Mexico. Several are easily found on the internet. There have been several reviews and commentaries on this story. One of the stranger reprintings was for use as a student manual in “a structured approach to reading in English.” “Red Nails” is one of REH’s most reprinted stories. But if we’re focusing purely on the ability of the artwork to create an impact, then I don’t think any original Conan story or adaptation comes up to the standard of “Red Nails.” Roy Thomas wrote in Barbarian Life: Volume 1, Pulp Hero Press, 2018: “The Tower of the Elephant” is probably my favorite collaboration with Barry, largely because the tale it’s based on also happens to be my favorite REH story. Howard’s Conan The Barbarian: Red Nails, Marvel Comics, 1983. Barry Windsor Smith’s tour de force earned another reprinting in Robert E. It was later colorized and reprinted in an oversized format for Marvel Treasury Edition #4. Marvel Comics originally adapted the story for Savage Tales #2 and 3.
