His job: to accompany a Prosperan whose life has come to its natural end on their journey to retirement - a process from which they reemerge as a younger version of themselves, with a blank slate where their mind, memories, and identity used to be. Which is where Proctor Bennett comes in.īennett, whose official title is “managing director for District Six of the Department of Social Contracts, Enforcement Division,” is a ferryman. The population is small, and most of Prospera’s residents enjoy peaceful, productive, fulfilling lives. When it became apparent that human civilization was determined to destroy itself, Prospera was created: a cluster of islands hidden from the world by an electromagnetic field, not a utopia but a self-contained, self-sufficient society. His new novel, The Ferryman, is, quite simply, a masterpiece - structurally complex, thematically ambitious, with exquisitely detailed characters and a vividly realized world. The trilogy, which began with The Passage (2010) and continued with The Twelve (2012), is a remarkable achievement in post-apocalyptic horror fiction: terrifying, intensely emotional, and beautifully written. It’s a tough act to follow. It’s been seven years since Justin Cronin wrapped up the Passage trilogy with the spectacular The City of Mirrors.
